What is Poetry? — Definition and Analysis

What is poetry? Many experts have attempted definitions of poetry over the centuries, but I am going to propose an uncommon definition based on my experience as a boy when I began exploring poetry independently. I hesitate to call this a "new" definition, because someone else may have used it before, but it is not a definition that I remember running across in my extensive studies of poetry over forty years. Here is my definition, which will be followed quickly by examples which I believe help prove my case:

Poetry is the magic of words.

It is important to note that by this definition, most "poetry" is not really poetry because it lacks the essential magic. Most poetry that we see today is really prose with line breaks; the line breaks make the prose look like poetry. But when we read the prose, we are unmoved because it lacks the magic that makes poetry an art. If I draw stick figures with a crayon, is that art? No, because my stick figures will not take your breath away. A great artist can take your breath away for a moment, because there is magic in his/her art. The ability to move audiences―to make them feel something―is the test of art, and of the true artist.

I am going to expand on my definition before I start presenting examples of what I mean:

Poetry is the magic of words: the inherent rightness of the best possible words.

In the perfect poem, the perfect words appear in the perfect order. But is absolute perfection possible? Perhaps not, but as we are about to see, some poets have either achieved perfection, or they have come damn close. But theirs is not an icy crystalline perfection; rather, we can feel a warm human heart beating in the background ...

How did you feel when you read the poem above? Did it move you? If so, that is what I mean when I say that poetry is the magic of words. We can find the same magic in the best song lyrics: "Greensleeves," "Shenandoah," "Danny Boy," "Angie" by the Rolling Stones, "Candle in the Wind" by Elton John, "A Change is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke, and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel ... just to cite a few quick examples.



Bread and Music

Sappho, fragment 42

Eros harrows my heart:
wild winds sweeping desolate mountains,
uprooting oaks.

This poem by the ancient Greek lyric poet Sappho comes to us from the dawn of time. Eros symbolizes passionate, sexual love, and is the root of our word "erotic." Has a passionate romantic relationship ever seemed like a wild, unnerving storm to you? A wild ride that left your foundations in tatters? If so, perhaps this poem will strike a chord ...



Do not stand at my grave and weep
by Mary Elizabeth Frye

Do not stand at my grave and weep:
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starshine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry:
I am not there; I did not die.

This consoling elegy had a very mysterious genesis, as it was written by Mary Elizabeth Frye, a Baltimore housewife who lacked a formal education, having been orphaned at age three. She had never written poetry before. Frye wrote the poem on a ripped-off piece of a brown grocery bag, in a burst of compassion for a Jewish girl who had fled the Holocaust only to receive news that her mother had died in Germany. The girl was weeping inconsolably because she couldn't visit her mother's grave to share her tears of love and bereavement. When the poem was named Britain's most popular poem in a 1996 Bookworm poll, with more than 30,000 call-in votes despite not having been one of the critics' nominations, an unlettered orphan girl had seemingly surpassed all England's many cultured and degreed ivory towerists in the public's estimation. Although the poem's origin was disputed for some time (it had been attributed to Native American and other sources), Frye's authorship was confirmed in 1998 after investigative research by Abigail Van Buren, the newspaper columnist better known as "Dear Abby." The poem has also been called "I Am" due to its rather biblical repetitions of the phrase. Frye never formally published or copyrighted the poem, so we believe it is in the public domain and can be shared, although we recommend that it not be used for commercial purposes, since Frye never tried to profit from it herself.



This Living Hand

John Keats was very ill as a young man and died prematurely. Does this poem make you feel like he is reaching out to you from the grave, as it does me?



The Snow Man
by Wallace Stevens

One must have a mind of winter
To regard the frost and the boughs
Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;

And have been cold a long time
To behold the junipers shagged with ice,
The spruces rough in the distant glitter

Of the January sun; and not to think
Of any misery in the sound of the wind,
In the sound of a few leaves,

Which is the sound of the land
Full of the same wind
That is blowing in the same bare place

For the listener, who listens in the snow,
And, nothing himself, beholds
Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.

If I understand Wallace Stevens correctly, at times he questioned why we are here, and if life has any ultimate meaning. Does his poem communicate the emptiness of not mattering, of us not really being "real" to you, as it does to me?



Piano

Softly, in the dusk, a woman is singing to me;
Taking me back down the vista of years, till I see
A child sitting under the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings
And pressing the small, poised feet of a mother who smiles as she sings.
In spite of myself, the insidious mastery of song
Betrays me back, till the heart of me weeps to belong
To the old Sunday evenings at home, with winter outside
And hymns in the cozy parlor, the tinkling piano our guide.
So now it is vain for the singer to burst into clamor
With the great black piano appassionato. The glamour
Of childish days is upon me, my manhood is cast
Down in the flood of remembrance, I weep like a child for the past.

Does thinking about the past, and about lost loved ones, sometimes make you want to break down and cry? Did D. H. Lawrence make you catch your breath, as he did me?



Song For The Last Act

Music that is not meant for music's cage,

Now that I have your voice by heart, I read.

Now that I have your heart by heart, I see.

Did Louise Bogan make you see someone you care about in a different light? Even though "the notes shift in the dark," do you feel that you somehow know another person nonetheless? This is a poem about the intimacy of a long-term relationship. Do you sometimes see "by the heart" what the intellect fails to fully understand? If so, this poem may contain the kind of magic that I've been discussing ...



The Death of a Toad

Chewed and clipped of a leg, with a hobbling hop has got
   To the garden verge, and sanctuaried him
   Under the cineraria leaves, in the shade
      Of the ashen and heartshaped leaves, in a dim,

Spends in the earthen hide, in the folds and wizenings, flows
    In the gutters of the banked and staring eyes. He lies
    As still as if he would return to stone,
        And soundlessly attending, dies
           Toward some deep monotone,

And cooling shores, toward lost Amphibia's emperies.
    Day dwindles, drowning and at length is gone
    In the wide and antique eyes, which still appear
        To watch, across the castrate lawn,
            The haggard daylight steer.

Have you ever had compassion, and a sense of empathy, when viewing the struggles of a dying animal? Is our ultimate fate any different than that of Richard Wilbur's hobbled and dying toad?

One can easily sever what never was one:
our song together.

This is one of the oldest poems in the English language: an Anglo-Saxon poem from the dawn our our language. Do you feel the anguish of the female speaker?



Acquainted With The Night

Those Winter Sundays

The Garden

The Most of It

Elegy Written in a Country Church-Yard

The Epitaph

Or draw his frailties from their dread abode

Church Going

Once I am sure there's nothing going on
I step inside, letting the door thud shut.
Another church: matting, seats, and stone,
And little books; sprawlings of flowers, cut
For Sunday, brownish now; some brass and stuff
Up at the holy end; the small neat organ;
And a tense, musty, unignorable silence,
Brewed God knows how long. Hatless, I take off
My cycle-clips in awkward reverence,

Move forward, run my hand around the font.
From where I stand, the roof looks almost new—
Cleaned or restored? Someone would know: I don't.
Mounting the lectern, I peruse a few
Hectoring large-scale verses, and pronounce
"Here endeth" much more loudly than I'd meant.
The echoes snigger briefly. Back at the door
I sign the book, donate an Irish sixpence,
Reflect the place was not worth stopping for.

Yet stop I did: in fact I often do,
And always end much at a loss like this,
Wondering what to look for; wondering, too,
When churches fall completely out of use
What we shall turn them into, if we shall keep
A few cathedrals chronically on show,
Their parchment, plate, and pyx in locked cases,
And let the rest rent-free to rain and sheep.
Shall we avoid them as unlucky places?

Or, after dark, will dubious women come
To make their children touch a particular stone;
Pick simples for a cancer; or on some
Advised night see walking a dead one?
Power of some sort or other will go on
In games, in riddles, seemingly at random;
But superstition, like belief, must die,
And what remains when disbelief has gone?
Grass, weedy pavement, brambles, buttress, sky,

A shape less recognizable each week,
A purpose more obscure. I wonder who
Will be the last, the very last, to seek
This place for what it was; one of the crew
That tap and jot and know what rood-lofts were?
Some ruin-bibber, randy for antique,
Or Christmas-addict, counting on a whiff
Of gown-and-bands and organ-pipes and myrrh?
Or will he be my representative,

Bored, uninformed, knowing the ghostly silt
Dispersed, yet tending to this cross of ground
Through suburb scrub because it held unspilt
So long and equably what since is found
Only in separation — marriage, and birth,
And death, and thoughts of these — for whom was built
This special shell? For, though I've no idea
What this accoutred frowsty barn is worth,
It pleases me to stand in silence here;

A serious house on serious earth it is,
In whose blent air all our compulsions meet,
Are recognised, and robed as destinies.
